I started
portraiture just because I'd never done it and wanted to learn
how. I find the John Singer Sargent portraits inspiring: not
just the big society oils but especially his charcoal drawings.
Gwen John's and Ken Paine's portraits are also particularly
moving. I committed myself to a regular evening class, beginning
with drawings in pencil then progressing with charcoal, pastels
and oils. Eventually I felt confident enough to hire my own
models and leave the protective atmosphere of the class.
This page
shows a selection of portraits ranging from "Carrie", a two-hour
study on A5 board to "Katherine - Reflective", A1 in size and
requiring about a dozen sittings.
