Going Up. Coming Down was inspired by watching Rockhopper penguins doing exactly what the title suggests. I was fascinated by the constant stream of activity which began with the Rockhoppers in the water waiting for a wave to deposit them on a rock. They’d then begin the long climb upwards to the colony whilst another line made their way back to sea.

The painting was originally conceived as a landscape format but changing to a portrait format showed the whole experience more effectively.
