These Magellanic penguins were painted after a field trip to the Falklands, which resulted in many penguin pictures. It was so interesting to see how the different species reacted to humans. When I sat sketching Rockhoppers those inquisitive little penguins were practically pecking at my toes, but the Magellanic were the shy penguins and would dive in to their burrows if anyone came too close.
the way the Magellanic penguin markings mimic the lines on the rocks,
almost as though they'd evolved out of the rock itself. As well as providing
practical camouflage, they appeal to my interest in the repeating colours
and patterns found in nature.
